Professional Careers Advancement Tips for Women

Many of us think that to advance in our careers, we have to jump jobs every few years. In reality, however, your current job likely offers a variety of opportunities and roles that you have not yet taken advantage of. If you are confident in your abilities, Professional Careers and want to take big leaps forward, you must accept new challenges, more responsibilities, and develop your skills.

People don’t fall into great roles, opportunities, or positions. These opportunities come after you have stretched yourself to access the next level of courage, risk-taking, persistence, and your will to make what you want.

Take time for yourself

Simple, right? But most of us are guilty of not making time for ourselves in our busy schedules. It’s natural for life to take over you, and we give up on many of our responsibilities. Every morning, if you wake up a little before your normal routine begins, you can refresh your mind to do the things you want to do – whether it’s to learn a helpful new skill at work, take an online course, or just to exercise or meditate.

Outsource & delegate frequently

We often take pride in having accomplished a big task on our own or taking on a lot of responsibilities and getting it done. But take a step back and think – should you do it all yourself or is it something you can delegate? Outsource things you don’t need to touch. Delegating effectively is key to moving from what you can personally do to what you can manage. Delegating is very important for two reasons:

  1. It gives you more time to work on the things that require your expertise & attention and allows you to advance to higher positions of authority.
  2. You allow your subordinates to pick up skills and equip them to handle more such tasks independently. They will be able to take the task and see it by giving them their full attention.

Find yourself a mentor

When you are starting a new job or navigating your career, finding someone who can teach you things can be very helpful. Mentors can be the key to your professional success simply because they have overcome similar challenges and are in the position you are today.

They can guide you through the maze of your career with anecdotes from their experience and personal wisdom. Successful people who are further in their careers than you can make great mentors. Ask them how they got there. What strategies do they employ to get through their day, month, and year?

And if you’re lucky, you might even find yourself a ‘sponsor’ – someone who will use their human capital (resources) to help you get to where you want to be. For example, it could be a phone call or an email to refer you to your next job

Accept the challenge

Often if you ask successful people what catapulted their careers forward, they will tell you that it was the situation, project, or situation they were most nervous about taking on. That would be something that no one wanted to try because of how difficult it seemed and that they had to step outside of their comfort zone to do it.
